The cornea is a complex structure of eye ball which, as well as having a protective role, is responsible for about three quarters of optical power of eye. It is a transparent structure. Any kind of opacity in cornea may affect vision.
What are the major diseases that occur in the cornea.
- Injury: – May lead to rupture of cornea.
- Infection:-Mainly from scratches on the cornea and contact lens.
- Diseases of corneal shape
- Post operative ( Mainly after cataract surgery)
- loss of cornea transparency.
- Contact lens related corneal disease.
Corneal ulcer:
Most common problem. In corneal ulcer disruption of its epithelial layer with involvement of the corneal stroma. It is a common condition in humans particularly in the tropics and in farming.
Symptoms of corneal ulcer:
- Red Eye
- Watery Eye
- Eye Pain
- Photophobic
- Blurring of vision
Treatment:
Precaution for Corneal ulcer:
- Don’t Rub your Eyes
- Eye protection – Put on safety glasses.
- Proper cleaning of contact lens.
- Treat as soon as possible.
